|TOO MANY COMEDIANS - 6/27/10
by Troy Higgins
There are too many comedians and not enough funny material to go around. You know how often you should see a comedian? Once a year. You see them more than once and you’re gonna hear the same material. So see them once and then get the hell out of there. And don’t watch them on one of the late night talk shows; they take up valuable time by working their act into the conversations with the late night hosts. Hey, if you’re there as a performer that’s one thing, but if you go and sit by the host don’t take your act there. Don’t be takin’ it to the seats...cause then Michael McDonald will write a terrible song about it. Michael McDonald: the man who single-handedly destroyed the Doobie Brothers' credibility. Either him or that guest appearance they had on What’s Happening!!. Remember that big ass tape recorder; the one Rerun had under his jacket? What else did he have under there?
So yeah, there are too many comedians and not enough funny material to go around. Fortunately, Dane Cook isn’t taking too much. Or maybe he’s just not allowed. He’s like the little kid in Oliver Twist, “Please sir, I want some more.” “No! You’ve had enough already and all you did was play with it and drop it on the floor. You wasted good food. You’re a terrible eater.” And speaking of Dane Cook, when did he turn into Jerry Clower. The guy doesn’t tell jokes anymore. He tells stories and performs monologues that last forever. Who has time for this? Someone's giving a one page report on what they did for their summer, meanwhile Dane Cook's reciting War and Peace. Or maybe Atlas Shrugged, cause when he finally gets to the punchline you...(shrug).
Metacommentary: Is it becoming passe to make fun of Dane Cook? Has that fad run its course? Has he taken enough abuse? Or is it open season as long as he chooses to stay in the public eye and make bad movies and perform mediocre standup?
